Compiled from a series of interviews conducted with 11 youth development professionals, who have collectively worked with over 30,000 Armenian youth over a period of 30 years, Ara Arzumanian’s presentation identifies some of the central difficulties faced by Armenian teenagers living in Los Angeles – namely Glendale, Hollywood, and North Hollywood. The results of these interviews, interspersed with Arzumanian’s own experiences, demonstrate that Armenian youth are not immune from the ills facing youth throughout Los Angeles and provides some strong directives on actions the community should take.

*Ara Arzumanian has been working as a professional in the field of youth development for the past nine years. In that time, he has worked with over 1000 youth. He currently works for the Armenian General Benevolent Union directing the prevention-based AGBU Generation Next Mentorship Program, serving Armenian youth in Glendale and the Greater Los Angeles Area. Previously, he was one of two staff, who designed the operations of the City of Glendale’s Youth Outreach Program (COG YOP), including methods of service delivery and the array of services to be delivered. As a coordinator with the COG YOP he provided intensive case management to youth dealing with serious issues.
Recognized in the community as an effective and passionate youth advocate, Mr. Arzumanian currently serves on the School Violence Prevention Committees of Toll and Roosevelt Middle Schools in Glendale and is on the Glendale Unified School District’s Healthy Start Collaborative. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in English from UC Irvine.
